BOOM BOOM Goes the Big Bear!

Rationale: This lesson will help children identify /b/, phoneme B. Through meaningful representation, with the Big Bear, and the letting symbol B. They will practice finding /b/ in words and apply phoneme awareness with /b/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters.

Materials:

  1. Primary paper and pencil

  2. Word cards with pictures BEAR, BIG, DEN, STOMP, BOOM, FOREST

  3. Bear coloring/practice sheet

  4. crayons

Procedures:

  1. Hello class! Today, we are going to talk about the letter B. The way we write what we say is more like a secret code. What makes it hard it trying to figure out and remember what sound each letter stands for. Today, we are going to learn about the letter B, which makes the /b/ sound. Do you hear the /b/ sound in Boom? How about Bear?

  2. Let’s practice saying B! I’m going to say a silly sentence, then I want everyone to repeat it with me! BOOM! BOOM! Goes the big bear! Good job! Did you notice what our mouthes did when we said /b/? Our lips touched together and then we released a puff of air!

  3. Have you ever seen a big bear walk? Well, there can be a big bear SO big that every stomp he takes after he leaves his den, the whole forest goes BOOM! Let’s walk around the classroom like big bears one time and then go back to our seats. Say BOOM every time you take a step!

  4. Now that we practiced walking like a bear, we’re going to see if you all can hear the /b/ sound in words. I’m going to say two words, then ask you which word has the /b/ sound. I will call on one person to answer. Which word has the /b/ sound, Bear or Den? Stomp or Boom? Big or Forest?

  5. (Hand out bear coloring sheet) Now we’re going to practice writing B. Follow the dots on your coloring sheet to practice writing the letter B! Then, go ahead and color in the big bear.

  6. Now that we know all about the letter B, we’re going to practice writing using our new knowledge! (Hand out primary paper) Write me a message about the Big bear. Be creative!
